Civil marriage
In Venice we organize civil weddings in the historical Cavalli Palace. It is
a wonderful XVI century Renaissance building stands in one of the most
picturesque areas of Venice, overlooking the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge. It
has spectacular and breathtaking vistas and it allows for the bride or bridal
party to arrive in a gondola, according to the city’s tradition, accompanied
by the delicate lapping of the water and by the magnificence of the façades
of the ancient venetian palaces.
The building takes its
name from the Cavalli family who lived there, and it was also the residence
of the American novelist James Fenimore Coope
Inside, the palace features antique Venetian furnishings, paintings, frescoes
on the walls, and it is plenty of natural sunlight for photos and
videos.
The elegant rooms on the piano nobile are devoted to the bride and groom. The
largest is full of light, with large windows overlooking the Grand Canal
taking up one whole wall and providing a definitely privileged panorama. In
it you can also admire ancient and impressive paintings and among them there
is “The Golden Wedding”, a work by the famous Venetian artist Luigi Nono
(1850-1918).
Upon arrival, you are greeted by the Mayor or an official, who begins the
marriage service.
Once the wedding ceremony begins there will be a reading of some traditional
Italian wedding vows. Those vows will also be accompanied by the reading of
specific articles from Italian Law about marriage and family that explain to
the couple what their new marriage will create for each of them
Our interpreters translate for you step by step the marriage service. The
ceremony can last up to 30 minutes. It is also possible to personalize the civil
wedding ceremony by adding readings and vows you have chosen in addition to
those legally required by the Italian government.
To complete the civil wedding service in Italy, the bride and groom are
presented with the official documentation to sign. The witnesses are also
given paperwork to sign at this time.
Once that is all done you are officially married and your Italian civil
service has a legal value.
Catholic
Italian State recognizes the civil effects of the sacrament of the marriage
disciplinated by the Canonic law. It need to make an appointment with the
priest of the Church where the marriage is celebrated.
There
are the same procedures of the civil marriage (presentation of the documents,
appointment with Uffical Registry Office, etc.).
Foreign citizens that wish to get married in a catholic church in
Venice must get married civilly in their country or they have a civil
marriage before that.
Catholic blessings pronounced over a civilly married couple may be arranged
in Italy.
Outdoor Catholic weddings are not allowed in Italy, although no restrictions
are placed upon symbolic ceremonies.
If you are planning a Catholic Wedding Service, Italy is the perfect
destination for your wedding due to the fact that Italy weddings are rich
with Catholic religious history.
There are two basic types of service with a Roman Catholic wedding: a
ceremony with or without a mass. The first option, with a mass may take just
over an hour; the second option about half an hour in length, is quite
straightforward, with readings and hymns.
If you have been divorced, you will not be allowed to marry again in a
Catholic Church. The ceremony could be done only if you can acquire an
annulment for your previous marriage and have it recognized by the Church. If
that cannot be done, you may still have a “Mixed Ceremony” or “Blessing
Ceremony” provided in a Catholic Church.
Jewish
Jewish ceremony can be celebrated in Synagoga of Venice held by Rabbi or you
can bring your own rabbi that celebrates the ceremony in a palace or in a
garden of hotels.
The Jewish community in Italy is entirely Orthodox and follows the Sephardic
minhag. However, people of any minhag may marry in this community. Rabbis in
Italy are not authorized to perform civil ceremonies other than for Italian
citizens, so you should do this on your own beforehand, either in your own
country. You may choose from any of the five synagogues in Venice, all of
different minhagim and sizes, all in the old, beautiful and historical
significant Ghetto.
The wedding ceremony is performed
in Hebrew. The wedding date must be fixed with the Rabbi so as to avoid times
of the year when, by Jewish law, the ceremony cannot take place.
Here following you can find the five Venetian Synagogue:
-The Schola Spagnola, a Sephardic synagogue, (1600). It seats over 250
people.
-The Schola Grand Tedesca (Ashkenazi, 1528). It seats aproximately 60
people.
-The Schola Canton (Ashkenazi, 1532). It seats about 60 people.
-The Schola Italiana (1575). It seats 60 people.
-The Schola Levantina (Sephardic, late 1600’s). It seats aproximately 120
people.
The marriage to take place, ten days should pass from the latest
menstrual.
The Jewish wedding may take place at any time, other than on the Sabbath,
major festivals, or other holy days. It may not take place during the
forty-nine days between Passover and Shavuot, with the exception of the
thirty-third day.
Requirements for a Jewish marriage:
Certificates from a Jewish Community attesting to the Jewishness of the
bride-and-groom-to-be and their membership. Membership to an Orthodox
Community makes things easier.

Protestant
Protestant weddings in Italy can be either a religious blessing or we can
provide a pastor who will perform a civil and protestant ceremony
simultaneously.
There are as many variations as there are protestant churches. Protestant
services have less restrictions and present much easier instructions to
follow thus making them a very requested choice as a type of religious
ceremony.
We have also to consider the possibility of a civil ceremony. The Pastor will
require a valid and recent civil marriage certificate prior to your Protestant
Wedding Service in Italy. This can be made in your home country before your
departure or arrange to have it done in Italy some days before of your
Venician Wedding.
Furthermore, you may be asked to provide verified proof of an appropriate
Baptism, too. A Baptismal Certificate ,a proof of confirmation or certified
letter from your Parish Priest will be enough. You've to plan a meeting with
the Priest a few days before your wedding date
Evangelical
In order to have an Evangelical Wedding service, you must prepare yourselves
for the ceremony. You have to speak with your local Evangelical Pastor as
well as the Pastor in Italy who will celebrate your wedding services.
If you would like to have an informal evangelical wedding service in Italy,
it will be enough to have a few guests without bridal or grooms attendants
and the ceremony will be surely performed in the sanctuary in front of the
Past
For a formal service, there is room for more guest attendance as well as
bridesmaids and ushers. In the church it may be provided provide musical or
choir accompaniment.
Orthodox
The Orthodox ceremony usually takes place in the afternoon or early evening. At
least one of you and one of the witnesses must be baptized in the Eastern
Orthodox Church. Interfaith and second marriages are permitted if church
requirements are satisfied.
Wedding services are not held during seasons of fasting or on certain holy
days.
Here are some of those days:
-On the Bright Week (Easter).
-During all the 4 long fasts
-During the Meat Fast.
-During the period between Christmas (January 7) and Baptism (Jan.19).
-On the eve of the 12 great feasts.
